Super Bowl Sunday: Keeping Perspective

What is your favorite part of the Super Bowl?  Is it the commercials? Snacks?  Half-time show?  How about the actual game itself?  For some, it’s the post-game press conference.  This is because you occasionally hear the testimony of a star player’s faith in Jesus Christ.  Having trusted Him as their Lord & Savior from the penalty of their sins in hellfire by believing in their hearts that Christ died for their sins, was buried, & rose again, their lives were transformed & given a purpose far beyond their professional athletic careers.  Be sure to enjoy the Super Bowl this year but keep things in perspective.

1. Enjoy the Game-Day Camaraderie-One of the best parts of the Super Bowl is getting together with friends & family to enjoy the big game.  GOD made us in His image which partly means that relationships are precious as we are able to love & show compassion.  Life is better when you share it with a friend.  Despite being so technologically connected through digital devices & social media, our culture is increasingly isolated from one another & incapable of really communicating on deep levels of the heart.  Enjoy the Game-Day Camaraderie but be sure to really think about the depth of your relationships & intentionally invest accordingly.

2. Enjoy the Game-Day Cuisine-Without a doubt, the most delicious part of the Super Bowl are the snacks, dips, & sauces that people bring to the table.  Before digging in, be sure to express gratitude to GOD as Provider, Protector, & Giver of life, breath, & all things.  He is faithful to provide for our needs especially those who belong to Him by His grace through faith alone in Christ (Phil.4:19).  Enjoy the Game-Day Cuisine but give thanks to the LORD first.

3. Enjoy the Game-Day Competition-Athletic contests & the spectacle of sporting events rightly captivate our attention because of the incredible capacity of men & women to accomplish amazing feats on the field & court.  This is one of GOD’s gifts to us having been created in His image.  Keeping a balanced perspective though can really be a challenge because our culture inappropriately idolizes athletes by elevating them to a god-like status.  For example, how many justify missing church because of having season tickets?  What kind of priorities are parents setting for their kids when practices & weekend tournaments easily bump out faithful church attendance & ministry involvement?  Enjoy the Game-Day Competition but keep it in perspective.

Keeping Perspective-Who won the Super-Bowl last year?  5 years ago?  10 years ago?  How about 25 years ago?  Ten thousand years from now, it will not matter who won for all that will have faded into trivial matters of utter insignificance in comparison to the reality of the only thing that matters at that day.  What we did with Jesus Christ in this life will determine where we will be in eternity.  Are you a born-again believer in Christ that has been saved by grace of GOD through faith alone in His blood?  Do you really believe that what you believe is really real?  Does your life reflect that?  Keep perspective!

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 NKJV
